Rose named Richland mayor

Richland has a new mayor for the first time since 2008.

David Rose, the mayor pro tem, was picked by his fellow council members on Tuesday night for the mayor position. The vote was unanimous, with no other council members nominated for the two-year post.

Rose, who joined the council in 2004, said he’s honored to take over for longtime Mayor John Fox, who retired from the council at the end of 2013. “(He) left a big pair of shoes to fill, and I’m going to try to fill them the best I can,” Rose said, adding that the strong city staff and rest of the council will make the job easy.

Under Richland’s form of government, the mayor is a member of the council chosen by his or her council colleagues. The duties include running city council meetings and representing the city at community events.

The council on Tuesday night also picked Councilman Phillip Lemley as the mayor pro tem. The field was more crowded for that position, with Councilmen Brad Anderson and Terry Christensen also nominated.

In other action Tuesday, four council members were sworn in for new terms.

Gregory L. Jones won election in November to Fox’s seat. Three incumbent council members also were up for election last fall, and all triumphed at the ballot box. Rose and Councilwoman Sandra Kent fended off challengers to keep their seats, and Councilman Bob Thompson ran for reelection unopposed.

Jones will serve for two years and the others for four years.

Typically, council terms are four years, but in Richland the winning council member with the fewest votes in each election serves a two-year term.
