An 18-year-old man turned himself in to police this week after allegedly assaulting his estranged wife and holding a knife to her throat.

David Almaraz Echeverria went to a house on the 400 block of South Sharron Street on Monday in Kennewick to try and make up with his wife, according to police.

The couple argued over text messages the woman had received, police said. The woman told police Echeverria punched her several times before going to the kitchen and getting a knife. He then reportedly held the knife to the woman's throat.

The woman locked herself in a bathroom and Echeverria left the house with the couple's infant daughter, police said. Echeverria eventually gave the baby to his mother, who returned her to his wife's family.

The woman was treated at a local hospital for cuts to her arm, police said. Echeverria is in custody at the Benton County jail.
