License plates for Sounders, Seahawks fans go on sale Thursday

Specialized license plates tailored for Seattle Seahawks and Sounders fans go on sale Thursday, and the Pierce County Auditor’s Office will open early in anticipation of eager buyers.

The state Department of Licensing has said demand will determine how many plates, which feature the 12th Man flag for the Seahawks and a team scarf for Sounders FC, will be sold.

The first 25 were auctioned off last month, with the much-desired plate 00012 going for $42,299.

Plates will cost $67.75 for passenger vehicles, $49.75 for motorcycles or small trailers, and $55.75 for a large trailer.

Those costs include standard plate fees plus a $40 special license plate fee.

Proceeds will benefit three nonprofit organizations. Money from the Seahawks plates will go to InvestED, a Seattle-based group that partners with schools around the state to help low-income students buy clothes and school activity cards and pay testing fees.

Plate sales for the Sounders will benefit Washington State Mentors, an Issaquah-based agency that provides grants and assistance to youth organizations. A small portion of the proceeds from the plates will go to the Association of Washington Generals.

Only cash or checks will be accepted at the auditor’s office.

"People should have managed expectations," Auditor Julie Anderson said, adding that only a temporary license plate will be issued at the time of purchase. The real plates will be mailed later by the state Licensing Department.

The Tacoma office at 2401 S. 35th St., No. 200, will open at 7 a.m. Thursday, and employees have permission to get decked out in sports attire.
