Letter: Another ‘dream’ victory

December 29, 2013

Congratulations to the Chiawana High School football players and the coaching staff for pulling off a very rare “dream situation” in the state championship game. Two minutes left and down by two scores — the Riverhawks won the game. One onside kick was needed. They recovered that kick and then went on to win the game as state champions! Rare indeed. But I was present in a similar “dream situation.” It was in the late 1960s or early 1970s. I officiated a football game at Connell High School against Columbia High School from Burbank. Connell was three scores down with about two minutes left in the game. They scored and they recovered two onside kickoffs. Time expired on the winning touchdown. Connell won the game after many fans had already headed for home. The Burbank coach was beside himself and very disappointed. The irony of the situation was that the Burbank coach is now a longtime Pasco School District administrator by the name of John Morgan.
