Letter: Stamp price increase defies common sense

December 26, 2013

I owned and managed a Thriftway Market and a 300-seat restaurant. Both were as competitive a business as you will find. During the years, there were tight and tough times. During those times, raising prices to recoup my losses was never a option. That would have, of course, led to bad P.R., loss of customers and eventually failure of the two endeavors.

Evidently, I never had the common sense, nor business expertise that our U.S Postal Service and congressional oversight committee possess, because mail volume has dropped drastically along with revenues. USPS now will increase stamp fees by two cents to 49 cents to recoup its losses. But never fear. Officials stated the increase only will last two years then terminate. As the old saying goes: If you believe that, I have a bridge I want sell you.
