Othello wrestlers win Leonard Schutte Invitational

The Othello Huskies got titles from Isaiah Barrera (106 pounds), Manny Martinez (132), Lorenzo Garza (138), Jesus Montes (182) and Bubba Ruiz (285) to claim the Leonard Schutte Invitational title Saturday.

Martinez topped Kamiakin’s Damien Gooldy 6-4 in three overtimes for his title, and Garza edged another Braves wrestler, Frankie Garcia, 5-2 at 138.

Kamiakin freshman Cyle Deleon pinned Tanner Benton of Clarkston in 1:36 to win the title at 120.

Corey Salinas (126), Cedar Ceja (145), Zach Borish (152) and Nick Little all placed third for the Braves.

Edmonds Invite: Senior Bryce Overholt pinned Spencer Schultz of Edmonds-Woodway in the second round to win the 182-pound title and lead Southridge to the team title at the 18-team Edmonds Invite.

Overholt, who was fifth at state last year, was the only titlist for the Suns, who had Clayton Detmer place second at 126.

Connell Invite: Jesus Domingues at 106 and Josiah Guerra at 120 won titles for Warden, which took the team title thanks to six finalists.

Connell won more titles — Jody Jenks at 138, Robert Orozco at 152 and Greg Heinen at 195 — but had to settle for fourth place. Kiona-Benton placed third behind championships from Cruz Del Angel (182) and Tanner Cook (220). Royal placed fifth with first-place finishes from Carlos Hernandez at 126 and Emilio Bustos at 160.

Connell Girls Invite: Pasco won the team crown behind titles from Jennifer Cano at 124, Hailey Hall at 130 and Alexa Castellanos at 155. Richland’s Tamika Pierce cruised to the 106 championship, and Chiawana’s Marylou Martinez won at 118.
