Man injured in BFT bus crash

A Richland man was hurt after a Ben Franklin Transit bus crashed into his car Thursday morning, said the Washington State Patrol.

The accident happened at 5:55 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 82, four miles west of Benton City.

Monte R. Edwards, 53, was driving a 2006 Toyota Corolla when he slowed down because of some debris in the road. He was hit by a 2013 transit bus, driven by Patricia S. Badeaux, 58, of Kennewick.

Edwards was taken by ambulance to Kadlec Regional Medical Center, where he was treated and later released.

Badeaux was not hurt. Inattention was listed as the cause of the accident and charges are pending, WSP said.

One passenger was on the bus but was not injured, said transit spokeswoman Kathy McMullen.

It appeared that little could have been done to prevent the accident, she said.

“The car slammed on its brakes, the bus slammed on its brakes,” McMullen said. “But it was on the freeway, so that’s the way it went.”

BFT officials plan to review video recordings taken from the bus to see what happened, McMullen said.

“We’re getting so we have cameras on almost all of our buses,” she said.
