BOYS BASKETBALL: Kennewick opens season with win

Mitchel Mueller had 16 points and John Wuol added 13 points and four assists as the Kennewick Lions won their season opener with a 71-45 road win over Lake Stevens.

The second half of the game was even, with Kennewick holding a 32-30 edge, but the Vikings were unable to match the Lions’ 39 points in the first half.

Junior Jacob Vargas added two points and four blocks for the Lions.

Neil Blaine led the Vikings with 15 points.

HANFORD 78, CONNELL 41: Brady Heid scored a game-high 19 points and Kendall Watson added nine assists as visiting Hanford beat Connell in a nonleague game.

Gage Taylor paced the Eagles with 10 points and 11 reounds.

Gabe Porter added 17 points for the Blue Devils, who shot 53 percent from the floor and 78 percent from the foul line.

Mitch Hohman scored 12 points to lead Moses Lake, which led 35-16 at the half and 54-23 after three quarters.

Granger 53, Columbia-Burbank 38: Javier Castro poured in 22 points as Granger beat Columbia-Burbank on the road in the preseason opener for both teams.

The Coyotes outscored the Spartans 26-18 int he second half, but could make up the deficit from Granger’s 35-12 lead the half.

Matt Boulds led the Coyotes with 10 points, while Tim Ellis added nine and Chayce Sorbel seven.
