Letter: Show proper respect for flag and national anthem

I attended the dedication of Columbia Basin College's monument on Veterans Day. The college, the staff, and the student body did an excellent job on the dedication. The Dedication was well attended with a strong military presence.

I was, however, very disappointed with the crowd. During the raising of the flag of the United States of America and the playing of our National Anthem, at least half of the civilians attending did not show proper respect to our flag and anthem. Specifically, they did not stand at attention with their right hand over their heart as required by Title 4 "The Flag Code of the United States of America."

Section 171 of Title 4 specifically deals with conduct during the playing of the National Anthem and Section 177 of Title 4 specifically deals with conduct during the raising, lowering or movement of our flag.

I don't know if our schools are no longer teaching flag etiquette or is it that people no longer care. I would ask every person reading this letter to please educate your children, your friends and your neighbors. Show your pride in this great nation.
