Letter: Time for politicians to put America first

November 26, 2013

Sen. Daniel Webster in 1850 stated before the Senate, "I speak today, not as a Northern man, but as an American." What a novel idea!

Today it seems Democrats and Republicans have become so polarized they have lost site of the concept. Anything Republicans put forth is automatically rejected by Democrats and vice-versa. Who now speaks for the people?

Daniel Webster was willing to risk his career and reputation for the good of the country. Today it appears party and re-election are the important causes.

Next year, I will be eligible to vote, and I suspect my decision may well be to throw all our politicians out and start over.

There are many other historical examples of country first. Daniel, what happened?
