Fire destroys wood shed in Finley

November 19, 2013

A wooden shed used to store wood was destroyed Tuesday night at 219396 Perkins Road in Finley, said Capt. Devin Helland of Benton Fire District 1.

When fire crews arrived just before 7 p.m., the shed was fully engulfed, destroying much of the stored wood. Two trees and a treehouse also were burned.

Fire crews attempted to salvage what they could of the stored wood while putting out hot spots. A nearby shop sustained some heat damage, Helland said.

The fire was extinguished by 7:15 p.m.

The cause likely stemmed from a controlled burn the homeowners did Monday. The theory is the leaves were not completely extinguished and the fire crept under the leaves to the wood shed, Helland said.

“It’s important to always be sure a fire is 100 percent out before you go to bed,” he said.

Fire crews from Kennewick and Pasco assisted in putting out the fire.
