Letter: What did Doc Hastings say about shutdown?

November 19, 2013

There was a hole in your coverage of the 16 days of government shutdown. It lacked quotes from U.S. Rep. Doc Hastings.

When I was a newspaper reporter and editor in Longview, we interviewed our local leaders regarding national issues and quoted them prominently. Our readers knew how they were being represented.

Your recent coverage of the shutdown did include at least one comment from the representative of our neighboring district, Cathy McMorris Rodgers, and from our senators.

But where was Doc Hastings?

I saw one lengthy sentence of the kind pulled from a press release. If you interviewed him when the crisis started, while it was going on, and when it ended, where was the coverage? How did he answer your questions about his votes? What did he say about the danger of thousands of Tri-City workers being furloughed?

Because your work is usually well done, I wonder why this information is missing. Perhaps Doc Hastings doesn't return your phone calls? If so, we need to know that too.
