Mount Spokane picked up an early goal after a Southridge defensive mistake and cruised to a 3-0 win in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament Tuesday at Spokane Falls Community College.
We didnt get off to a very good start, giving up a goal in the fourth minute. We just cleared a ball right to them, Southridge coach Greg Sambrano said. But they played better than us today. They won the 50/50 battles and had really good movement. Theyre one of the best teams weve played.
The Wildcats outshot the Suns 8-4, but Southridge had its chances to score, too.
We had two breakaways and didnt get anything, and we missed a penalty kick, Sambrano said. I dont know if many people expected us to get to state with so many young players, but a lot of those players contributed to our success, Sambrano said. We do lose three really good seniors (Michelle Foster, Bree Lane, Hannah Sanders), but we have a lot of players to pick up some of that loss.
Whitney Weaver and Sierra Bezdicek scored second-half goals for Mt. Spokane (13-6), which will face Kamiakin (19-1) in the quarterfinal at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lampson Stadium.
Its going to be a good game, said Sambrano, who was 0-2 against both teams this season. I really think Mt. Spokane is a better team, but Kamiakin always finds a way to win big games.
