Girls soccer: Southridge eliminated in state tournament

November 12, 2013

Mount Spokane picked up an early goal after a Southridge defensive mistake and cruised to a 3-0 win in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament Tuesday at Spokane Falls Community College.

“We didn’t get off to a very good start, giving up a goal in the fourth minute. We just cleared a ball right to them,” Southridge coach Greg Sambrano said. “But they played better than us today. They won the 50/50 battles and had really good movement. They’re one of the best teams we’ve played.”

The Wildcats outshot the Suns 8-4, but Southridge had its chances to score, too.

“We had two breakaways and didn’t get anything, and we missed a penalty kick,” Sambrano said. “I don’t know if many people expected us to get to state with so many young players, but a lot of those players contributed to our success,” Sambrano said. “We do lose three really good seniors (Michelle Foster, Bree Lane, Hannah Sanders), but we have a lot of players to pick up some of that loss.”

Whitney Weaver and Sierra Bezdicek scored second-half goals for Mt. Spokane (13-6), which will face Kamiakin (19-1) in the quarterfinal at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lampson Stadium.

“It’s going to be a good game,” said Sambrano, who was 0-2 against both teams this season. “I really think Mt. Spokane is a better team, but Kamiakin always finds a way to win big games.”

Scoring—1, MtS, Kendall Boyd, 4:00; 2, MtS, Whitney Weaver, 50:00; 3, MtS, Sierra Bezdicek, 57:00. Shots—S 4, MtS 8. Saves—SR, Tiara Valadez 5. MtS, Shannon McReynolds 4.
