Letter: Time for Congress to renew public's confidence in government

November 12, 2013

I had an opportunity to meet for 15 minutes with U.S. Rep. Tom Foley, Speaker of the House, at his Spokane office when I was section head for the State of Washington's alcoholism treatment program.

Upon accepting the challenge, Foley gave me closer to 45 minutes. Tom was gracious gentleman, making demanding statements for the first 15 minutes or so, before accommodating me with approximately 30 minutes to respond. We shook hands, departing as friends.

This, one-on-one meeting resulted in an congressional appropriation of nearly $13 million for a state program limited to $1.3 million biannually by the state Legislature. This federal appropriation was not possible without House support and Senate approval.

Yes, together, we achieved what today is unknown within either government house. Tomorrow we may discover renewed confidence within our governments.
