Playing an entire game for the first time this season, Kamiakin goalkeeper Kelci Young made a crucial save during the eighth round of a shootout Thursday to help lift the Braves to a Class 3A state berth.
Young stopped a University High shot and Lexi McQueary banged home the game-winner to give Kamiakin a 2-1 shootout victory in a District 5/8 tournament semifinal match at Lampson Stadium.
She gave us the opportunity to win with that save, Kamiakin coach Chris Erikson said. For coming back and not having really played since last season, she did brilliantly.
Young tore her ACL last season and made her initial return earlier this week, playing half the game. But Kamiakins other goalie Erin Leseberg couldnt play Thursday because of injury and Young stepped up and did a superb job.
The Braves (17-1) will host Mt. Spokane at 1 p.m. Saturday in the regional title game.
Ellie Heiden opened the scoring Thursday off an assist by McQueary in the eighth minute. University responded with a goal by Kelsey Walker in the 26th minute off a free kick.
The game remained tied through the rest of regulation and overtime, and even through the shootout as both teams missed their second shots.
It was a very tight, physical game, Erikson said. There were times they were dominating and we just had incredible defense.
Erikson cited the strong play of Brianna Turley as a sweeping midfielder, as well as the strong play of defenders Rachel Ensign, Sarah Burns, Lauren McKinney and Heather Donais.
