Tri-City high school graduates performing in CWU play

TRI-CITY HERALD STAFFNovember 7, 2013

Travis Franks, a 2010 Kamiakin High grad, will play a lead role in Central Washington University's production of Nanawatai, which opens Nov. 8 in the Milo Smith Tower Theater on the CWU campus in Ellensburg.

Franks, the son of Jim and Lory Franks of Kennewick, is a fourth-year theater major at CWU.

Haley Weis, daughter of Andrew and Karen Weis of Pasco, also has a minor role in the production. Weis is a 2013 Chiawana High grad.

Nanawatai follows the struggle of a Soviet tank crew commanded by a tyrannical officer during the 1980s invasion of Afghanistan. The crew is separated from its unit and pursued through the mountains by a band of Mujahadeen.

The play is based on the cult film classic, The Beast, which explores how cultural norms are betrayed by the brutal realities of war.

Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8-9, 14-16, and a 2 p.m. matinee Nov. 17. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors. Tickets are at the door or call 509-963-1750.
