Letter: Tom Foley improved safety for Eastern Washington drivers

November 7, 2013

Thanks to the late Tom Foley and the Herald for its fine editorial about the former congressman.

I do remember that snaky, killer Highway 395 from Pasco to Ritzville. Driving home one Sunday afternoon in the lead of a long line of cars going toward Pasco, with a long string of cars coming toward us, an impatient driver pulled out and headed straight for us. At the last minute, he swung to the left and ran up the shoulder.

The next weekend, the same thing happened again; only that time a mother was killed in the accident. That could have been us.

So thank you, Tom Foley, for that four-lane highway that made the trip to Spokane so much safer for us Tri-City travelers. I'm just sorry I never offered my thanks to you years ago.
