Franklin County deputies make arrest in Halloween haystack fires

November 2, 2013

— An Othello man is in jail on allegations he set fire to at least four large haystacks and one open field in north Franklin County on Halloween night.

Burt Ray Johnson, 24, was arrested Friday by Franklin County sheriff’s deputies. He was booked into the county jail on suspicion of second-degree arson.

The large haystacks and open field near Sagehill Road were completely burned in the late-night fires Thursday, said Detective Jason Nunez said.

Nobody was injured in the fires.

Deputies were able to connect Johnson to the fires and tracked him down Friday, Nunez said. It is believed he acted alone.

Franklin Fire District 4 handled the fire calls and assisted in the investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the fires or may know something about them is encouraged to call the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office at 509-545-3501 or the non-emergency dispatch line at 509-545-3510.
