I was a Port of Kennewick commissioner, along with Gene Wagner, during the time John Givens was the Port of Kennewick's executive director.
Recently, Wagner wrote a letter to the editor relating to John's inability to close Vista Field. The fact is that after public hearings, the Port of Kennewick Commission voted unanimously to keep Vista Field open. If John had been the only decision maker, the airport would have been closed 15 years ago. John did not agree with keeping Vista Field open, but it was not his decision to make. He stated after the vote was taken that he did not agree with the commission but he would do what he could to make it the best little airport possible.
I believe John would make a good port commissioner, since he knows that his job as a commissioner would be to set budget, direction and policy for the port and the job of the executive director is to execute the wishes of the commission. My wife, Alice, and I fully support John's return to the Port of Kennewick as a commissioner because he is knowledgeable and worthy of the post.
