Man who died in Pasco police custody reportedly had cocaine, alcohol in system

October 24, 2013

— Authorities believe a mixture of cocaine and alcohol killed a 35-year-old Yakima man who stopped breathing as police arrested him in September.

Ismael Maria-Acevedo died as result of mixing the drugs and his death has been ruled an accident, said Dan Blasdel, the Franklin County Coroner. Blasdel was investigating what caused Maria-Acevedo to die after he ran from Pasco police on Sept. 3.

Maria-Acevedo was reportedly one of several people involved in a fight outside the Golden Nugget nightclub in Pasco. When police arrived, the group scattered and officers chased Maria-Acevedo near the area of South Eighth Avenue and A Street.

Maria-Acevedo stopped breathing when he was arrested, police said. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Police officials say no weapons, including stun guns or pepper spray, were used to arrest Maria-Acevedo.
