Manhunt targets suspect in gunshot slaying of Prosser man

October 23, 2013

— Yakima police are conducting an intense manhunt for a 22-year-old man suspected in the fatal shooting of a Prosser man last Friday.

Angel Fabian Venegas Jr. is wanted in connection with the death of Joshua Mathis, 26, whose body was found Friday evening in the parking lot behind the Red Apple Motel.

Officers swarmed a section of a neighborhood behind the Clarion Hotel, off North First Street, Monday night, following up on a tip that Venegas was in the area.

Mathis died from injuries that included a gunshot to the head, authorities said. His was the second fatal shooting in Yakima in less than 24 hours. Early the same day, a man was shot to death after a dispute over a game of pool at the Brews and Cues tavern in downtown Yakima. Two suspects have been arrested in that case.

Capt. Rod Light said the Violent Crimes Task Force, which includes federal agents as well as local police, were on the hunt Tuesday for Venegas.

Mathis was born in Prosser and worked for Merck Construction in Grandview and Albrecht Glass in Sunnyside. He graduated from Prosser High in 2005, according to his obituary.

He loved guitars both playing them and rebuilding them; he also loved to draw and was extremely artistic, the obituary said.

A viewing and visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Grandview. Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Grandview with burial to follow at Grandview Cemetery.
