The carbon tax proposal in the Oct. 6 In Focus column is in reality another nail in the coffin of American prosperity. Creating another big-government bureaucracy to enforce this progress and job-killing redistribution scheme could cost domestic product losses in the trillions, including skyrocketing costs for fuel and electricity.
This is especially onerous in view of the loss of freedom, mobility, damaging an already-fragile economy and national security, and all based on an unproved theory full of scientific holes. So what caused the last massive glacial ice age to melt? Neanderthal fire pits? The Earth has been under physical and climatic changes since its formation. So how is this human-caused? Pseudo-environmentalists have cried wolf so many times their credibility is suspect -- empowering groups opposed to almost everything -- no coal, no nuclear, no hydropower, no oil, no anything. What's left? Bicycle-powered generators?
The assertion that fossil fuels damage society is absurd. Basic biology teaches us atmospheric carbon dioxide is converted to carbohydrates by photosythesizers, metabolized and released. Without "greenhouse" gasses, of which water vapor is the most common, life could not exist. No efficient and economic alternative to petroleum (which should be produced domestically) now exists.
