Elderly man hit by pickup in Walla Walla, dies at scene

Tri-City HeraldOctober 20, 2013

— An elderly man was killed Sunday morning when he was hit by a pickup truck while crossing the street in Walla Walla.

The truck hit Rojelio Rios, 81, around 9 a.m. as he crossed Poplar Street near Providence St. Mary Medical Center, said Tim Bennett, Walla Walla police spokesman. Rios’ body was reportedly dragged under the truck.

The Walla Walla man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe sun may have blocked the vision of the Ford F250’s 51-year-old driver, Bennett said. Police did not release the driver’s name.

The driver was making a left turn onto Poplar Street from Seventh Avenue when he hit Rios, who was in the crosswalk, Bennett said.

Poplar Street was closed for three hours while the collision was investigated. No citations had been issued to the driver as of Sunday afternoon.
