Our Voice: Don't mark ballot too soon

October 16, 2013

There is a ballot coming soon to your mailbox. Benton County is mailing its tomorrow and Franklin County sent its yesterday.

Either way, you will get your ballot before we finish making our editorial recommendations.

Those will run the rest of this week and all of next week, with a roundup on Oct. 27.

We expect a lot of people have their minds solidly made up in at least a few races. Still there may be others they are unsure of.

Our advice is to at least consider our recommendations.

Which means you may have to wait a week or so to mark and return your ballot.

We hope that nobody depends entirely on us for their voting decisions, but we hope everyone at least thinks about what we have to say -- and why we say it.

Have you wondered how we come up with our recommendations? We do our own research and we invite the candidates in for an interview. This year you can see the process online for yourself if you like.

We interviewed the candidates for the state Senate race, Sharon Brown and Phil Lemley on Tuesday. You can watch it by clicking on the link at tricityherald.com. Our recommendation in that race will appear in Sunday's paper.

Other races we are making recommendations in are the Kennewick, Richland and West Richland city councils; Kennewick General Hospital board, fire levy lid lifts in Benton and Franklin counties and Initiative 517.

Even though your ballot is arriving soon, it won't be counted until Nov. 5.

There's still plenty of time to make an informed decision.
