Megan Young scored in the 86th minute to lead the Columbia Basin College women’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over Treasure Valley in NWAACC East play Wednesday in Pasco.

Young (Kennewick) followed up a shot from Ruby Herrera (Sunnyside) that was deflected by the Chukars keeper.

“The ball came from the outside to (Herrera), and she took the shot,” CBC coach Matt Mills said. “The keeper parried it off to the side, and Megan followed in off the initial shot and was able to slit it back across the keeper to the far post.”

It was the culmination of a fluid game for the Hawks, with Mills praising the team’s passing combinations that added up to 12 shots on frame. He said a big difference has been moving Herrera and Yesenia Alvarado (Richland) up front, and they have been generating more shots.

“It was pretty evenly matched back and forth,” he said. “We were just a little bit fitter, got in a little more and made our chances count.”

Mills called it a huge win for CBC (5-4-2, 3-4-2 East) in securing the third and final postseason berth. While Walla Walla and Spokane are running away from the pack, the Hawks are solidly ahead of the valleys — Treasure, Yakima and Wenatchee — which have just one regional win between them.

CBC plays at Wenatchee on Saturday.
