Volleyball: Southridge tops Kamiakin in 4 sets

October 8, 2013

A big night from the middle has the Southridge Suns front and center in the Mid-Columbia Conference volleyball race.

Kimberly Brinkworth had 26 kills and four blocks, and Paige Thompson added nine kills and three blocks as the top-ranked Suns notched a 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 25-21 win over the host Kamiakin Braves on Tuesday night to maintain a two-game lead in the MCC standings.

“Our middle hitters did a great job tonight,” said Southridge coach John Lengphounpraseut, noting Brinkworth’s astronomical .564 hitting percentage and Thompson’s .389. “Both Paige and Kimberly, those two stepped up and did a great job tonight on the offense.”

Third-place Kamiakin likely was the final stumbling block to a league title for the Suns, with a finale against Chiawana in two weeks Southridge’s toughest remaining test.

“With a win tonight, we pretty much have a clear shot at the conference,” Lengphounpraseut said.

Amanda Miller led Kamiakin with 16 kills and 18 digs, while Rachel Leshikar had 28 digs, was 17-of-18 serving and had three aces.

“I was real proud of the way my girls played,” Kamiakin coach Mary Opitz said. “They played much more relaxed. Southridge is a good team, they have a well-balanced group. They should do well the rest of the season and in the postseason and we’re hoping to be there with them.”

Lengphounpraseut added heart-felt thanks to Kamiakin fans and personnel for helping raise money for Southridge sophomore coach Sal Dumo, who was diagnosed with cancer two weeks ago.

“It was an emotional night at the gym,” he said, “and the Kamiakin coaching staff did a great job.”
