Officials called off their search of Zintel Canyon in Kennewick on Thursday morning after they could find no sign of a body reportedly seen earlier this week by a teen.

Searchers looked through part of the canyon on Wednesday evening after a 15-year-old girl said she saw a dead body in a swampy area of the canyon.

A search team didn’t find a body, and the search was called off about 6 p.m. Kennewick police and members of the Columbia Basin Dive Rescue team returned Thursday morning to continue looking.

The teen told police she saw the body earlier this week as she was walking through the canyon, Sgt. Randy Maynard said. She apparently told family members, but didn’t report it to police until Wednesday.

Searchers walked through heavy brush and searched streams below the 10th Avenue overpass for more than two hours.

Police are working with the Kennewick Irrigation District to lower the water flow in parts of the canyon to help searchers, Maynard said.

There are no reported missing people in the area, though transients do hang out in the canyon, Maynard said.
