The Cavalcade of Bands, a popular Northwest high school marching band event, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 5 at Neil F. Lampson Stadium in Kennewick.
Preliminary competition starts at 9:15 a.m. The final competition and an evening show start at 6 p.m.
The Instrumental Music Boosters from Kennewick and Pasco high schools are sponsoring the event, now in its 32nd year.
The fierce competition features more than 2,500 student musicians from 20 high school bands and ensembles from Washington, Idaho and Oregon.
The top 12 bands will advance to the final competition at the stadium, and an awards ceremony takes place at 9:30 p.m.
Local bands performing in the Cavalcade are from Chiawana, Hanford, Kamiakin, Richland and Southridge high schools.
Each group will compete for distinction in multiple categories, including music, visual, percussion, general effects and drum major awards.
The host bands are from Pasco and Kennewick high schools. They won't compete but will perform at the evening show.
Shows are based on music by contemporary as well as classical composers, with customized arrangements and drill formations created specifically for the 2013 season.
Admission to the daylong event is $14 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Children 5 and younger are free.
