The West Richland City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to place a six-month moratorium on the selling and manufacturing of recreational marijuana in the city.
There was no discussion.
A public hearing on the issue is planned for 7 p.m. Nov. 5 in the city council chambers so the city staff can draft zoning and land-use regulations for the licensing of a possible marijuana retail outlet, said City Attorney Bronson Brown.
The moratorium will expire on March 1, or sooner if the city establishes regulations to govern the production and sales of marijuana before then.
In September, the state Liquor Control Board released a draft of the regulations governing the licensing and operation of marijuana producers, processors and retailers. The board plans to adopt final regulations in October. If so, the regulations will take effect on Nov. 16.
The draft regulations propose allowing a maximum of one licensed marijuana retailer to operate in West Richland.
