13 sheep killed by West Richland driver on Oregon interstate

October 1, 2013

— A West Richland man drove into a herd of sheep, killing 13 of them, on Interstate 84 in the Blue Mountains in northeast Oregon.

Robert Anderson, 51, drove a 1998 Toyota Camry into the herd, which was in the middle of the westbound traffic lanes near Meacham, about 8 p.m. Monday, the Oregon State Patrol reported.

The car caught fire and was a total loss after firefighters extinguished the fire, the state patrol said.

The state patrol said the driver was uninjured.

The police said Tuesday it wasn’t clear how the herd got onto the interstate highway south of Pendleton. Attempts to reach the ranch owner were not immediately successful, The Associated Press reported.

Thirteen sheep belonging to a local ranch were killed and later removed from the scene, the state patrol said.
