Letter: Dorothy's trips to Oz good analogy for drug addiction

September 17, 2013

I read Chris Seller's response (Letters, Aug. 14) to my letter using the Wizard of Oz as an addiction learning tool. Let me reassure: I think Dorothy is a good girl. However, Chris exhibits classic angry denial by supporters and family that is a hurdle in treating addiction.

He states that Dorothy doesn't trip to Oz because she promised she wouldn't. Truth is the first casualty of addiction. Those of use who have read the complete collection of Oz books by L. Frank Baum, know that Dorothy continues to trip to Oz in spite of her promise.

It appears that we need to offer Dorothy compassionate help once we have overcome the denial of her co-dependents, enablers and loyal fans.
