GMO foods have nothing to do with Luther Burbank's cross breeding of potatoes or of typical hybridization processes. GMO foods are created in a laboratory, often creating unnatural crosses such as plants crossed with bacteria or viruses. The FDA requires no pre-market health safety studies, and the only long-term peer-reviewed animal study conducted involving GMO corn sprayed with Monsanto's Round Up herbicide, found massive tumors, organ failure and premature death in rats.
Studies have linked these foods to allergies, organ toxicity, diabetes, cancer, autoimmune disorders, birth defects, high infant mortality rates, fertility problems, and sterility. Hospital admissions for food allergies have increased by more than 250 percent since GMO foods were introduced to the marketplace. Nearly all commercially produced corn and wheat is now GMO. Before GMO wheat became prevalent, had you ever heard of anyone with a gluten allergy?
I have yet to see a single explanation of how labeling food with "Contains GMO ingredients" will cost farmers, retailers, food processors or consumers a single penny more. Labels are changed all the time for a myriad of reasons. Please vote yes on 522. We have a right to know what we are feeding our kids.
