Braves excel at Sundodger; Bradley wins Highlander

Garrett Kraal finished seventh and Cameron Glade 13th to lead the Kamiakin boys to a second-place showing at the prestigious Sundodger Invitational on Saturday at Lincoln Park in Seattle.

The Braves placed fifth in the girls race as Megan Beauchene and Kaylee Sanchez placed 5-7.

Kraal clocked in at 15 minutes, 14.54 seconds on the 5-kilometer course, about 27 seconds off the pace of nationally ranked Joe Hardy of Seattle Prep (14:47.20). Glade finished in 15:28.74, followed closely by teammate Andrew Snyder (17th, 15:38.87).

"He ran fantastic," Kamiakin coach Matt Rexus said of Kraal. "And Cameron Glade's PR (personal record) coming into the race was 16:03 from last year."

Phillip Fishburn (26th), Daniel Sanchez (28th) and Ben Brooks (31st) finished within a few seconds of each other as the Braves gave Gig Harbor a good chase, 63-91.

Beauchene, who placed fourth at state last year, finished in 18:09.97, nearly 30 seconds behind winner Brenna Peloquin of Gig Harbor. Sanchez, the surprising sophomore, was 10 seconds off Beauchene's pace in 18:19.37. Brittany Brooks finished 31st in 19:26.51.

Highlander Invite: Lindsey Bradley led a pair of strong finishes for Richland, taking first in the girls varsity race in Spokane. Michael Williams was third in the senior boys event.

Bradley, a junior, finished the 2.5-mile course in 14:39.70, ahead of Lewis & Clark's Gracie Ledwith. Walla Walla's Courtney Cox was third in 15:18.60, and Southridge's Emily Kump (16:02.66) finished 10th.

Richland placed third in the team race, a point in front of Walla Walla.

Williams clocked in at 13:07.93, not long off the pace of Ferris' Peter Helman (13:01.82) in second place but well back of Shadle Park's Nicholas Hauger (12:34.52).

Walla Walla's Juan Cortez (13:44.42) placed 13th. Richland's Eli Shelby (13:38.98) had a strong run in the junior race, placing 11th. Southridge's Cameron Johnson (13:43.00) and Richland's Jonah Sandoval (13:54.54) posted nice times in finishing second and fourth in the sophomore race.

Richland and Walla Walla finished 3-4 in team scoring in both the junior and senior races.

Capital Invite: Seth Cook and Haley Porter gave Hanford strong finishes in the senior race.

Cook placed 15th on the boys side in 12:53.33 on the 2.3-mile course. Garrett Bates finished 15th in the junior race in 13:03.43 and Porter McMichael 12th among sophomores in 13:05.38.

Porter placed 10th in the girls senior race (15:50.73). The Falcons also got a pair of strong freshman performaces as Hailey Cleavenger (15:45.27) and Rachel Schmidt (15:48.43) finished 7-8.

At Capital High, Olympia (2.3 mile)

Ellensburg Invite: The Tri-Cities Prep boys and girls each placed fourth in the team race running primarily against Class 2A and 1A competion.

The Jaguars boys, the three-time defending 2B/1B state champs, were led by Kelly Smith (13th, 13:07 on 2.35-mile course) and Phillip Geist (17th, 13:11). Their top six runners scored within 42 seconds of each other, and all seven in just over a minute.

Audrey Hermann (16:23) and Victoria Nunez (16:24) finished 14-15 for the Prep girls.
