In Focus: Should the identities of Level 1 sex offenders be published? Give people the chance to change

September 15, 2013

Humans make some big mistakes. The vast majority of registered sex offenders, classified as Level 1, are considered at low risk to re-offend. First-time offenders, who usually know their victims, have already undergone public scrutiny and had to answer to their abhorrent actions. Without excusing their behavior, I think it may be more important to give Level 1 offenders a second chance to make decent choices and live an upstanding life.

We live with such an excess of distrust between neighbors, why add to it? While finding compassion for those who have made big mistakes may be easier toward a loved one, forgiveness toward strangers is the only path to peace.
