Girls soccer: Virgen leads Chiawana past Davis

Sydney Virgen had her first big game for her new team, scoring a goal and assisting on the game-winner to lift Chiawana to a 3-1 win over Davis on Tuesday in Pasco.

Virgen, a transfer from Pasco, placed a corner kick in front of the net in the 60th minute, and Braydey Hodgins headed it past Pirates goalkeeper Katie Fowler to break a 1-1 tie.

“It was a very poor first half, but we played with a sense of urgency in the second half and picked up a nice win,” wrote Riverhawks coach Rich Zoller via email. “Virgen and Lexi Ellingsen had strong games in the center midfield.”

Ellingsen scored the first goal of the game in the third minute, but Davis countered with a goal two minutes later to tie the score.

The score remained locked for the next 55 minutes before Chiawana broke the tie.

Hanford 4, Hermiston 0: The Falcons put up 32 shots against the Bulldogs in a nonleague matchup in Hermiston, but managed just four goals.

Sydney Shintaffer leaped above a crowd on a corner kick from Bret Baysinger, heading the ball past Bulldogs goalkeeper Kilie Harrison in the 20th minute for a 1-0 lead.

Hanford scored two more goals within a one-minute span in the second half to take a 3-0 lead. Maddy Bingham banged home a penalty kick in the 53rd minute, and Monica Rowley netted her first a minute later. Sadie Newsome capped the scoring for the Falcons in the 77th minute.

Emily Busselman had a quiet night in goal, recording her second shutout of the season with just one save.

KIONA-BENTON 2, HIGHLAND 1 (SO): Sabrina Acevedo and Janet Aguilar scored in the shootout for Kiona-Benton, giving the Bears an SCAC victory over Highland in Cowichee.

Stephanie Lopez scored in regulation for Kiona-Benton, while Lesly Quezada tied the scored in the 40th minute for Highland.
