Americans let game slip away to Thunderbirds

Justin Hickman scored with 49 seconds left in regulation to rally the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 3-2 victory over the Tri-City Americans on Friday at the Red Lion Hotels Preseason Tournament at Toyota Center.

The Americans (1-4) led the entire game until Seattle’s Seth Swenson tied the score at 2-2 at 17:11 of the third period.

Tri-City opened the scoring at 2:23 of the second with a power-play goal by Ryan Chynoweth. Michael Sauer followed 1:13 later to give the Americans a 2-0 lead.

Troy Trombley finished with 33 saves for Tri-City, which killed off 4 of 5 Seattle power plays.

Danny Mumaugh had 15 saves for Seattle, while Justin Myles stopped all 12 shots in playing the second half of the game.

In earlier games, Everett beat Portland 8-2 and Spokane topped Kootenay 5-1.
