A 23-year-old Sunnyside man was arrested Tuesday after police say he lit his estranged girlfriend’s car on fire in the parking lot of Charter College in Pasco.

Witnesses reportedly saw Francisco J. Rivera light the car on fire with some type of accelerant, said Pasco police Capt. Jim Raymond. An identification card with Rivera’s name on it was also found at the scene.

Rivera was booked into the Franklin County jail following the incident.

Students at the college reported hearing a small explosion and seeing flames shooting out of the car’s windows, said Dave Ferguson, Pasco fire battalion chief.

Investigators are still examining the car to determine what caused the fire, though it appears to have been “firebombed,” Raymond said.

The car had substantial damage and was towed from the scene.
