Man dies in Pasco police custody

An autopsy on a 35-year-old Yakima man who died in Pasco police custody was inconclusive about how he died.

Ismael Maria-Acevedo died while being arrested early Sunday.

Maria-Acevedo, a car salesman, was detained in the area of South Ninth Avenue and A Street in Pasco after a short foot chase, according to a Pasco police news release.

Police said he was believed to have been one of 15-20 people involved in a fight a short time earlier at the Golden Nugget nightclub, 210 S. Fourth Ave. Maria-Acevedo reportedly was one of several people who ran away by the time police arrived about 12:30 a.m.

Police found Maria-Acevedo near the area of South Eighth Avenue and A Street. The news release said they noticed he had stopped breathing while they were taking him into custody. Unsuccessful efforts were made to resuscitate him.

"No Taser, pepper spray nor any other weapons were used by police to affect the arrest," said the release, which wasn't issued until 10 a.m. Monday.

The Tri-City Special Investigations Unit, which includes officers from other departments in the region, is investigating the death because Maria-Acevedo died in police custody, said the release.

Franklin County Coroner Dan Blasdel said his office performed an autopsy on Monday, but will need to get lab results back before determining how he died.

"We'll look and see what was in his system and see if it had any bearing on his death," Blasdel said.

Maria-Acevedo was a native of Tecoman in southern Mexico and lived in the Tri-City area for 10 years, according to his death notice.
