Americans fall to T-Birds in preseason opener

August 30, 2013

Kennewick native Taylor Vickerman scored the lone goal for his hometown team, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Tri-City Americans dropped their preseason opener to the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-1 on Friday in the Everett Preseason Classic at Comcast Arena.

Seattle got on the board first as Michal Holub beat Eric Comrie 12:51 into the game. Vickerman tied the score at 13:41 of the second, getting assists from Ty Comrie and Tyson Dallman.

Eric Comrie stopped 17-of-18 shots before turning the net over to Troy Trombley midway through the second period.

Trombley, who finished with 14 saves, gave up a goal to Carter Folk late in the second, and goals to Mathew Barzal and Keegan Kolesar in the third.

The Americans’ penalty kill was a bright spot, killing off 4-of-5 Seattle power plays.

Tri-City, still trying to make decisions on roster spots, dressed just seven skaters — and the two goalies — who played a significant role on the team last season.

The Americans return to tournament action at 11:30 a.m. Saturday against the Portland Winterhawks.
