kennewick school district teachers union rally

The union and district were able to reach a tentative agreement minutes before the rally started at 4 p.m. "We love our teachers," said Kennewick Superintendent Dave Bond. "This was a particularly challenging bargaining session because the Legislature hasn't provided any compensation for teachers since 2008."

The Kennewick School District reached a tentative contract deal with its teachers this afternoon.

The teachers' contract was set to expire Saturday and the Kennewick Education Association had planned a rally Thursday afternoon.

About 150-200 educators showed up at the Fruitland Building at West Fourth Avenue and Garfield Street in downtown Kennewick but soon left after hearing that a deal was reached.

“We are just very, very pleased that we were able to work with our administrators to come to a fair contract,” said Teri Staudinger, KEA president.

“We love our teachers,” said Kennewick Superintendent Dave Bond. “This was a particularly challenging bargain session because the Legislature hasn’t provided any compensation for teachers since 2008.”

“We’re really delighted to have a contract, but we also need the Legislature to do its part.”

The contract has yet to be voted on and approved by the school board. That is expected in the next couple weeks.
