Dust Devils keep playoff hopes alive

August 28, 2013

Needing a victory to keep its slim playoff hopes alive, Tri-City grabbed one Wednesday knocking off Vancouver 4-3 in 14 innings.

Patrick Valaika reached on a throwing error with two outs in the 14th, allowing Patrick Hutcheson to score.

Jerad McCrummen then came on to record the save for the Dust Devils, working a perfect inning.

The victory pulls the Dust Devils within 2 games of Spokane with five to play. They play the Canadians twice more on the road, before returning to Gesa Stadium for three more with Vancouver. Spokane lost to Everett 4-2 on Wednesday.

The Dust Devils appeared poised to pull out the victory against the Canadians, but closer Trent Daniel blew a two-run lead.

Dawel Lugo hit a game-tying, two-run home run with one out in the ninth. It was Lugo’s first home run of the year.

Tri-City jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two and a half innings, as Sean Dwyer hit a sacrifice fly in the first, Patrick Hutcheson an RBI single in the second and Michael Benjamin a run-scoring double in the third.
