Law enforcement evacuated a Basin City apartment complex early Sunday morning after a man threatened his girlfriend with a rifle and fired a shot into the air.

Franklin County sheriff's deputies were called to the complex on Road 170 at 2 a.m. by Jose Valencia-Mendoza's girlfriend, according to a news release. She told authorities the couple had been arguing before Valencia-Mendoza allegedly threatened her with the gun.

Deputies surrounded the complex and evacuated neighbors. Valencia-Mendoza initially refused to come out, and the Tri-Cities Regional SWAT Team almost entered the apartment when he surrendered.

Authorities found a high-powered semiautomatic rifle. They also found a handgun that had been reported stolen.

Valencia-Mendoza was booked into the Franklin County jail under suspicion of assault with a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm. He also had three outstanding warrants.
