Prosser woman dies in collision near Benton City

A fatal two-car collision on Interstate 82 just south of Benton City caused westbound traffic to back up for miles for two hours on Sunday.

Prosser resident Angelita Sandoval del Toro died after being taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, according to the Washington State Patrol.

She was a passenger in a Nissan Maxima driven by Juan Santos Sandoval del Toro, also of Prosser, who was taken to the hospital with injuries, state police said.

The crash happened around 11:45 a.m. in the westbound lanes about a mile south of the exit to Highways 225 and 224.

Juan Santos Sandoval del Toro was driving westbound on the interstate near the Benton City exit when Othello resident Barbara Schneider, driving a Dodge Journey, made an unsafe lane change and struck him, state police said.

The crash caused the Nissan to go into the median. Schneider was not injured in the collision, but both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

The Nissan, the Dodge and emergency responders blocked both lanes, requiring law enforcement to direct traffic onto the right shoulder. The interstate wasn't fully reopened until just before 2 p.m.

Video uploaded to YouTube showed traffic backed up for miles on the hill descending down toward Benton City and the bridge over the Yakima River.

The incident is under investigation.
