Muddy Frogwater Festival gets hoppin' Aug. 16-18 in Milton-Freewater

Dori O'Neal, Tri-City HeraldAugust 15, 2013

The Muddy Frogwater Festival is celebrating 33 years of fun in Milton-Freewater, Ore.

This year's event is Aug. 16-18 at Yantis Park, at the corner of Dehaven Street and S.W. Second Avenue. It will feature all the usual charm and ambiance of an old-fashioned country get-together that Milton-Freewater is noted for.

There will be food and craft vendors, music, a pretty baby contest, barbecues, square dancing, a watermelon feed, 1K and 5K runs, and a kids zone complete with miniature gold, bounce houses and hands-on activities. The town's Aquatic Center will be open all day each day.

There won't be a parade kicking off this year's event. But the Harvest Time Fine Art Show returns for another year. It features amateur and professional artists from around the Walla Walla Valley exhibiting a wide range of art.

Monetary prizes will be awarded in three categories: 2D art, photography and 3D sculpture/fiber arts. The art show will be in the cafeteria at Central Middle School, near Yantis Park. Hours for the show are from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 16-18. Cheryl Cosner, the former director of Walla Walla's Carnegie Art Center, will serve as judge. In addition, the public will have the opportunity to vote for the People's Choice Award.

There is no admission to the festival, but there is a charge for food and beverages. Some charges may apply for vendor games or contest entries.

Live entertainment, featuring local bands and an eclectic mix of music, will be in the park's bandshell.

The Talent of the Valley performances are all three days, with the winner announced on the last day. Grand prize is $500, second place $250 and third $125.

Joaquin Avalos, last year's talent show winner, will perform a solo concert at 5 p.m. Aug. 17.
