Mid-Columbia sports roundup for Saturday, Aug. 10

Richland’s Drew McCullough and Hunter Ashby finished third and fourth at the 21st annual Banner Bank Junior Invitational that wrapped up Friday at Walla Walla Country Club.

McCullough shot a 71-76—147 to finish three strokes behind Blake Ellingsen of Spokane and Andrew Raab of Yakima. Ellingsen won the boys 15-17 division on the third playoff hole. Ashby shot a 149, including a 2-under-par 69 on the first day, the best score of either round.

Top junior golfers from Eastern Washington, the Idaho Panhandle and Umatilla County in Oregon took part in the two-day event.

In the girls 15-17 division, Walla Walla’s Emily Baumgart shot 77-81—158 to finish three strokes behind Lewiston’s Sammi Jo Spring. Pasco’s Jalayne Martinez shot 78-82—160 to finish third.

Kennewick’s Bolton Dauenhauer finished fourth in boys 12-14 wiht a 78-75—153, nine strokes off the impressive pace of Travis Kay of Ellensburg, who shot 74-70. Richland’s Macy Robertson shot 90-95—185 to finish third in girls 12-14.

Julio Billia made 21 saves and Canada blanked the United States 4-0 in the championship game of the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka U18 hockey tournament in Piestany, Slovakia. Alex Nedeljkovic made 26 saves but took the loss in goal for the United States. Tri-City Americans defenseman Brandon Carlo played for Team USA.
