Letter: Residents working to protect Flat Top Park

August 6, 2013

According to Bernadette Sloughter (Letters, July 29), "considerable misinformation is being posted and circulated in West Richland" regarding Flat Top Park.

Those of us working to protect Flat Top Park from commercial use are not misinformed. In 2011, we prevailed in our fight against commercial use in Flat Top Park. As recent as March 14, the city again tried to change the park parking lot to commercial by requesting the planning commission add this rezone request to the list of comprehensive plan amendments to be considered at a public hearing on April 11.

The commissioners did the right thing in not adding the Flat Top Park parking lot rezone request to the list of amendments under consideration. First the parking lot, then on to the other commercial uses shown on page 21 of the Van Giesen Corridor Renaissance Phase One Summary Report posted on the city's website.
