New Connell city adminstrator resigns 3 months after taking job

CONNELL -- Gian Paolo Mammone has resigned as the city administrator three months after accepting the position.

His last day with the city was July 31, according to Mayor Gary Walton.

The decision to part ways was mutual, Walton said.

"His vision for the city simply did not meet with our capabilities or financial ability."

Mammone, who joined the city staff in mid-April, previously was city administrator for Falls City, Ore, and had worked for 15 years in a number of communities in Oregon and Idaho. He has already moved to the Portland area, Walton said.

Under the terms of his contract with Connell, Mammone will receive three months salary and insurance payments, totaling about $6,654 a month, Walton said.

Walton planned to present Mammone's letter of resignation to the council at Monday's meeting.

"It's a matter of formality. I like to keep the council informed and the citizens informed," he said.

There are no plans to replace Mammone immediately, Walton said.

"Several of the candidates we interviewed when we were hiring are still available, so we'll be contacting them. I've also put the word out that we have an opening among the mayors and city administrators I know," he said.

In the meantime, Walton will fill the position of both mayor and city administrator. It's a job he held for nearly seven months after former city administrator Steve Taylor left Connell in September 2012.
