Walla Walla Bruins win Junior Legion state title

August 1, 2013

Logan Cordeiro hit a two-run, two-out, two-strike single in the bottom of the ninth Thursday to give the Walla Walla Bruins the Junior Legion state title at Borleske Stadium.

Cordeiro hit the full-count pitch down the right-field line. David Pontarolo scored from first with the game-winner.

The base hit gave the Bruins (39-7) a 9-8 victory over the Eastlake Baseball Club.

“We were estatic,” Walla Walla coach Jason Parsons said. “We were hanging on by a thread.”

The Bruins’ season comes to an end with the victory. It is the first state title in the team’s history.

Babe Ruth 15s: Coos Bay, Ore., scored the game-winning run on an error in the top of the seventh inning to beat Kennewick 3-2 in pool play at the Babe Ruth 15s Pacific Northwest Regional in Centralia.

Kennewick, 1-2, finishes pool play today. They need a win and a little help to move into Saturday’s bracket play.

DJ Dyer went 2-for-3 for Kennewick, while Seth Lugenbeal was 1-for-1 with two walks. Gerald Hein went 62⁄3 innings, striking out four and giving up two hits. He was tagged with three unearned runs.
