Woman dies in fiery crash outside Hermiston

July 31, 2013

— A woman died in a fiery crash at 1 p.m. Wednesday on Westland Road just west of Hermiston, according to the Oregon State Police.

She was driving a Nissan Altima south on Westland Road near Ternes Lane when she tried to pass another car.

Her car hit a Freightliner truck head on in the northbound lane, according to police reports. It was pulling a semi-trailer loaded with onions.

The car and truck both caught fire, and flames spread to a nearby field before Hermiston Fire and Emergency Services arrived.

Rafael Muniz Sanchez, 37, who was driving the truck, had minor injuries and was taken to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston.

He was released after treatment. His hometown was unavailable Wednesday.

The driver of the Nissan died before she could be taken to a hospital.

Police have tentatively identified her but are not releasing her name until they are sure of her identity.
