Dust Devils rally falls short in 6-5 loss at S-K

July 30, 2013

Eugene Escalante had just one hit Tuesday night, but what a doozy.

Escalante tripled to left field in the sixth inning, right after Tri-City reliever Alex Rodriguez loaded the bases on walks, and the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes opened a big enough lead to withstand the Dust Devils’ late rally for a 6-5 Northwest League victory in Keizer, Ore.

Escalante’s hit put the Volcanoes up 5-0 right before the Dust Devils scored two in the top of the seventh. Michael Tauchman tripled to bring home Patrick Valaika, who led off with a double. Tauchman came home on a wild pitch.

After S-K scored a run in the eighth, the Dust Devils hung three more on the board in the ninth, with RBI singles from Ashley Graeter and Michael Benjamin and an sacrifice fly from Julian Yan.

But Yan’s fly was the second out and left the bases empty, and Tri-City couldn’t finish the rally.

The Dust Devils return home today to start a five-game homestand with the Eugene Emeralds.
